SGA Elections, TrogdonMeisner Oh-Ten!

Hey all!

ASU held their SGA Pres/VP elections this past week where we had three candidate pairs running, including a new friend and my candidates, Ronnie Trogdon and Emily Meisner. I had the superb pleasure of talking with Ronnie last night and got to ask him some questions that I think really just emphasized the fact that I had chosen the correct candidate.

Ronnie is a seriously cool guy who was quite frank with me and my friends about whats important to him. He also took the time to ask us what was important to us, to make sure he could better represent us as Appalachian students.

I was seriously both surprised and impressed with the campaign put on by Ronnie and Emily. If you checked out their website, you can see that its pretty legit. I know US Congresspersons with crappier websites for the re-election. You can tell that Ronnie and Emily care about what their doing and they know that a good image is a big part of making their platform well liked.

Historically, because the candidates must when a majority and not a plurality of votes, there will be a run-off next week between the top two candidates and hopefully Ronnie and Emily will be in the run-off. I'll keep you guys updated on what throws down.

Grow up already...

Hey guys! It sure has been a while right? I'd like to think that I've made it a bit easier to keep up with my goings-on by linking my Twitter to my page, hopefully you'll enjoy that. I don't update it as often as famous people, but I'll update it at least once a day, if not twice or more.

The title of this blog might sound a little mean, but once I explain myself I think it'll become apparent that it's warranted.

I was at the ASU basketball game last night where we were playing Harvard in the first round of the College Insider Tournament. Me and my friends were sitting in the front row across the court from the ASU bench, so pretty rockin' seats. The game begins however and the teams take the court, and as we look over the opposition we see that Harvard's point guard, Jeremy Lin, was of Asian decent. While I was surprised to see someone of Asian decent just because there really isn't that many Asian basketball players as far as I knew, I was happy that there was an Asian player on the court. The guys behind us though (that I really hope were intoxicated, at least it would partially excuse their behavior) saw it as an opportunity to be (insert expletive of your choosing). They continuously yelled out an offensive term for Asians whenever he got the ball or came close to our side of the court, even after my friend Janie told them off and asked them to stop. Near the end of the game, we were up by 20 points and we brought in our last string of players (who are all white). One of the guys behind us that had been super annoying the whole game yells out "white power" and we all looked at him. "I'm talking about the jerseys, god guys you think I'm racist?" Yeah, I think you are, considering you just yelled out "white power" in public and you've been screaming racial slurs and profanity the entire game. I wanted sooo bad just to turn around and punch him in the face, but I didn't was to even respect him that much.

Why can't college students grow up? It was a 7pm game, a bit early to go get drunk, even on St. Patty's Day. Regardless of whether or not your drunk, you shouldn't yelling out racial slurs at a basketball game, especially if the people around you hate you. I'm a huge basketball fan and I understand getting carried away and even a bit of heckling now and then. But I think what this guy did was horrendous, unacceptable, and I wish he could be punished in some way.

To future ASU students: don't let this deter you from coming to App. Unfortunately, there's people like this at almost every college. With 16,000 students, there's bound to be some buttholes in there. But when you do come, try to have some common sense as to what is socially acceptable behavior in public and at sporting events.

That being said, Go Mountaineers!!

PS - Good luck to all prospective NC Teaching Fellows! You guys should be getting your letters this weekend.

Disney?

Yeah, that's right. Disney. I'm actually at Disney World right now with my family. I can't talk long, but I wanted to let you know that I'm tweeting our vacation pretty frequently at www.twitter.com/zach_mfm. Check it out! I'll post more once I get home.
